Shibadong Village’s collective income exceeds 5 million yuan

Villagers queued up to receive their dividends from the village collective in Shibadong Village, Shuanglong Town, Huayuan County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture on July 9. 2023 marked the 10th anniversary of the targeted poverty alleviation concept put forward by China’s top leader during an inspection tour to the village ten years ago. Shibadong Village has undergone earth-shaking changes in the past ten years. Its collective economic income exceeded 5 million yuan in 2023 from zero in 2013, with per capita annual income increasing to 25,456 yuan from 1,668 yuan. This year, 971 villagers in the village can receive a dividend of 757,000 yuan.

“Today I received 6,240 yuan, which I couldn’t even think of 10 years ago,” said a villager. He witnessed the transformation of the village collective economy from weak to strong. 10 years ago, Shibadong Village was very impoverished due to no industries and no young labor. In recent years, Shibadong Village has made efforts to develop a new-type rural collective economy. It has improved the quality of rural tourism, planted special crops, and develop mountain spring water, Miao embroidery and other industries.

It achieved a collective economic income of 3.8 million yuan in 2022 and over 5 million yuan in 2023, maintaining continuous growth. In 2023, the village received 838,000 tourists, with a tourism revenue of 19.745 million yuan, offering jobs to more than 30,000 people in the surrounding areas. As a pioneer of targeted poverty alleviation, Shibadong Village has established an interest linkage mechanism among the village collective, enterprises, and villagers to achieve common prosperity.

It is agreed that 60% of the collective income will be used for disaster relief, disability assistance, scholarship, new rural cooperative medical treatment, and public facility construction and maintenance, while 40% will be used for dividends. The villagers are more willing to participate in village collective affairs, with their sense of belonging, happiness, and achievement continuing to improve.

“Shibadong Village will continue to focus on industrial revitalization, expand ways to increase the collective income, and build a demonstration zone for industrial development in the Shibadong area with surrounding villages, allowing more villagers to share the fruits of development,” said Shi Jintong, Party secretary of the village.
