In the first half of this year, the Xiangxi Biancheng Airport completed a total of 1,240 takeoffs and landings of flights and handled 122,800 passengers, achieving a smooth transition from high-quality construction to high-level operation. Nowadays, it has become an important window for Xiangxi Prefecture to connect the world.
The airport, one with the highest altitude in Hunan Province, was open to traffic on August 18, 2023. Located at the junction of Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Guizhou, and in the central hinterland of Wuling Mountains, it has an average altitude of 700 meters and covers an area of 235 hectares. The total investment of the airport and its supporting projects reached 2.848 billion yuan, with a design target average annual passenger throughput of 300,000 and a cargo and mail throughput of 450 tons.
The airport has filled the gap of civil aviation airports in Xiangxi Prefecture, brought Xiangxi closer to the world in terms of time and space, and realized the aviation dream of 3 million Xiangxi people. At present, it provides direct flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Kunming, and Shenyang, and there are shuttle buses for each flight directly to the urban area, making it convenient for passengers to travel.
Li Jingjing, deputy manager of the Ground Support Department of Xiangxi Biancheng Airport, said, “Next, the airport plans to open routes to destinations such as Haikou, Xi’an, Xishuangbanna, Chengdu, Foshan, Quanzhou, and Wenzhou. We provide personalized and exclusive accompanying services according to passengers’ needs, including service reservations for first-time passengers, group passengers, and special passengers to ensure that every passenger enjoys themselves throughout the journey.
At present, the airport is making efforts to strengthen close connections with the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration, Wuhan metropolitan area, and Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, and establish connections with the Yangtze River Delta, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
With the opening of more routes, a “米” shaped route network centered around Xiangxi has taken shape. Xiangxi Prefecture will build a new pattern of airway-railway-highway intermodal transportation, providing more travel choices for people in Xiangxi,” said Lu Wei, general manager of the Xiangxi Biancheng Airport Company.
Over the years, the three-dimensional transportation pattern of Xiangxi Prefecture has undergone a great transformation, bringing about a new Xiangxi that connects the world.
