Lixi Village of Jishou City is now welcoming a bumper harvest of lotus seedpods, and villagers are busy picking them.
Lixi villagers have revitalized 9 mu (about 0.6 hectares) of lotus ponds to plant space lotus, a high-quality white lotus variety with a long growth period, many flowers, large lotus seedpods, and a high fruiting rate. About 300 kilograms of fresh lotus seeds can be produced per mu (about 0.067 hectares) of lotus pond, and they can be harvested from July until October.
“I can pick over 50 kilograms of lotus seeds and earn 200 to 300 yuan a day,” said a villager.
Lotus flowers not only beautify the countryside, but also fatten villagers’ wallets.
In recent years, Lixi Village has developed characteristic industries such as lotus ponds and courtyard economy based on local resources, and launched the “agriculture plus tourism” model to provide jobs for villagers and help them increase income.
